The object of study is the Ukrainian-Belarusian homonymic space.
The research aims at a comprehensive analysis of the peculiarities of the homonymic space in the structure of Ukrainian-Belarusian communication, as well as the role of homonyms in the organization of the text and their influence on the occurrence of typical errors in the translation of fiction from Belarusian into Ukrainian.
The investigation methods are determined by the interdisciplinary nature of the proposed work, based primarily on the principles of systematicity and dialectical unity. Clarifying the essence of the concept of homonymic space and the phenomenon of interlingual homonymy, outlining their boundaries, as well as the criteria for the formal distinction between interlingual homonyms and paronyms, we used the methods of conceptual and theoretical analysis. The obtained data is generalized by the method of theoretical synthesis. Actually, the same methods are used for formulating and generalizing the core principles of the classification of interlingual homonyms. Selecting and describing Ukrainian-Belarusian interlingual homonyms (homogeneous and heterogeneous), revealing their origin, specificity and nature of relations between them, we used the methods of continuous sampling, component analysis (splitting the meanings of words into separate semes), functional-stylistic analysis (identifying homonyms with stylistic asymmetry), comparative method (identifying homonyms with semantic incompatibility, semantic divergence), genetic, structural-semantic and descriptive methods. When highlighting the communicative approach to translation, revealing the stylistic potential of homonyms in a fiction text, the conditions and possibility of their adequate reproduction in another language, characterizing the main points of translation editing/revising and considering the typology of translation errors, all the theoretical methods listed above are sometimes accompanied by the demonstrative method.
The dissertation, for the first time, thoroughly and extensively examines Ukrainian-Belarusian interlingual homonymy through the prism of the etymology of lexical units, taking into account their semantic, part-of-speech, stylistic and other features, as well as, for the first time, circumstantially, using illustrative material, analyzes typical errors in the translation of a fiction text from Belarusian into Ukrainian, offers a their classification and assesses the impact of homonymy on their occurrence. The results of the research can expand and deepen further developments in the field of interlingual homonymy, translation editing/revising and error typologization.
The findings and collected material may be applied in lecture and practical courses of the modern Ukrainian literary language (“Lexicology”, “Phraseology”, “Lexicography”), within the disciplines “Ukrainian Language Stylistics”, “Linguistic and Stylistic Text Analysis”, “Theory and Practice of Translation”, “Literary Editing/Revising”, “Theory and Practice of Editing/Revising”, “Stylistics and Editing/Revising”, in special courses and special seminars on comparative typology, contrastive and communicative linguistics, during the writing qualification papers, textbooks, manuals on the relevant topics, for compiling lexicographical works, including a dictionary of Ukrainian-Belarusian interlingual homonyms.
