Essay

This thesis is a literary study of the semiotic aspects inherent in modern adaptations of Ukrainian literature. This work examines the specifics of intersemiotic translation in film adaptations of Ukrainian literary works. It analyses the differences between verbal and visual signs that determine the peculiarities of semantic changes in the transition from literature to cinema. The first section is devoted to theoretical aspects of intersemiotic translation. It is found that literary texts are based on conventional signs and linguistic structures, while cinema operates with iconic and indexical signs, creating a direct visual representation. According to U. Eco, cinema has a high degree of iconicity, which changes the mechanisms of perception. The chapter also discusses the problems of adapting literary narratives to the cinematic form, including the transformation of storylines, characters, and genre characteristics. The second section examines the typology of film adaptations based on the classifications of I. Rajewsky and P. Torop. The main ways of transforming literary genres into cinematic ones are identified. The author emphasises the need to modify narrative structures in accordance with the specifics of cinema, which can lead to the emergence of new genre formations and a shift in thematic emphasis. The third chapter analyses the film adaptations of The Kaidash’s Family by I. Nechuy-Levytsky, The Black Raven by V. Shklyar, and Felix Austria by S. Andrukhovych. It has been found that the film adaptation of the novel The Kaidash’s Family retains key socio-psychological themes, and cinematic means allow shifting the emphasis and exploring individual storylines in more depth. In the film adaptation of The Black Raven, the simplification of the narrative leads to the loss of some semiotic elements. The film adaptation of The Felix Austria reflects a reinterpretation of the original, emphasising adaptation as an artistic transformation rather than a literal reproduction. The study also highlights the influence of genre, semiotic and cultural factors on the adaptation process, emphasising their role in shaping cinematic discourse.
