Essay

The study highlights the children's concept of death and the existential fear of death in children with cancer diagnoses. The generalization of theoretical and methodological approaches to the comprehension of the organizational and psychological determinants of fears of pediatric cancer patients leads to developing the theoretical model of the organizational and psychological determinants of fears in children with oncohematological disorders in inpatient treatment. The empirical indicators that were identified to test the theoretical model of organizational and psychological determinants of fears in children with oncohematological diseases include: age-related fears of primary school age; experience of oncohematological disease; internal picture of illness (IPI); feelings of guilt, increased anxiety and other negative feelings; level of self-esteem; experience of the family system; experience of hospital stay; experience of other patients; relationship with medical staff. The dissertation contains the results of an empirical study of the organizational and psychological determinants of fears in children with cancer-associated diseases, analyses the test results of the theoretical model functioning. The research contains the results of the study of fears in children with oncohematological diseases at different stages of treatment with different experience of the disease, with different family composition. It provides the results of the study of organizational and psychological determinants of fears of children from the control group (without experience of cancer). The direct correlations are discovered between the fears of children with cancer and the experience of negative feelings: loneliness, sadness, uselessness, abandonment, and resentment, feelings of suffering, shame, and anxiety. The statistical correlations between fears and perceptions of the disease in children with cancer, ‘attitude to the disease’ and ‘family attitude to the disease’. In the course of the investigation the correlations between the disposition to blame oneself for the disease onset and actual fears in children with oncohematological diseases have been specified. A comparative analysis has been done to compare the results of the study of cancerous patients and non-cancerous children from the control group (without experience of cancer). The factor model identifies eleven factors of organizational and psychological determinants of fears in children with hematological oncological diseases. The article describes the correctional programmes for overcoming fears in children with oncohematological diseases in the conditions of inpatient treatment using art therapy methods, which were designed on the basis of theoretical and empirical results of the dissertation research. The scientific novelty and theoretical significance of the dissertation study is that for the first time the organizational and psychological determinants of fears in children with oncohematological diseases have been identified; the theoretical model of organizational and psychological determinants in children with oncohematological diseases in inpatient treatment is developed; the relationship between the fears of children with oncohematological diseases and their age, level of self-esteem, peculiarities of negative feelings, guilt, anxiety, perception of the disease, experience of oncohematological disease, experience of the family system, experience of hospital stay, and relationship with medical staff was empirically established; the peculiarities of fears in children with oncohematological diseases were determined; scientific ideas about the organizational and psychological determinants of fears in children with oncohematological diseases in the conditions of inpatient treatment and understanding of the peculiarities of fears in children with oncohematological diseases were deepened. The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of using the results of the study by practical psychologists, clinical psychologists, psychotherapists working with children with cancer in order to provide effective psychological support and psychological assistance to children with oncohematological diseases.
