Dissertation is dedicated to the historic-pedagogical analysis of the development of gymnasium as a secondary general educational institution on the territory of Ukraine which was included inti the Russian Empire. The social, political, pedagogical conditions in which this process took place and which had an influence on its evolution are determined and theoretically based, its tendencies and peculiarities are emphasized. Basing the analysis of curriculums and study programs the peculiarities of maintenance of gymnasium education are revealed and the trends of its development are designer. The influence and the connection of youth and pudlic-pedagogical movement over the development of gymnasium education are shown
