Kotsyuba Z. Expressiveness of nominal sentences as a problem of Translation Studies (based on the English and Ukrainian languages).

The thesis sets out to provide a comprehensive description of translational strategies in reproducing the expressiveness of nominal sentences (NS) in the two languages (based on fiction). For the first time a thorough contrastive analysis of the structure, semantics and stylistics of English and Ukrainian NS is presented. This piece of research having a certain value by itself constitutes the foundation for the analysis of the translation of NS to elaborate a set of criteria for the adequate reproduction of the said type of sentences in the target language. A typology of NS and their disambiguation from the homonymous structures are also discussed in the paper. NS in English and Ukrainian were found to be isomorphic as in both languages they have the identical logical semantics and are characterised by predicate deletion and possibilities of structural-semantic extension.
