Essay

The contribution of Ukrainian scholars of the analyzed period of time into the exploration of verbal methods theory has been fully presented; the experience of usage of the above mentioned methods in primary school practice of Ukraine in the second part of the XIX century has been summarized in the thesis for the first time. The genesis of verbal methods in Ukrainian and foreign History of Pedagogy has been determined. Retrospective materials concerning the conditions of successful usage of verbal studying, the variety of narration, catechetic and heuristic discussion, learning by heart, and repetition were put into a system as well. It was proved that in the conditions of the modern school the most effective is the following: the renewal of usage of certain methods of commenting reading, catechetic discussion elements, didactic narration, literary heuristic discussion, and varieties of repetition. The results of the thesis might be used for the qualitative improvement of the General Pedagogy courses,methods of teaching other subjects, differentiation of forms and methods of students creative activity.
