Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the research of the peculiarities of the nominative aspect of representing odors in Modern French. Having analyzed French dictionaries, French fiction of the XIX-XX centuries and perfumery advertising material the author of the thesis describes means of language and speech nomination of odors as they fulfil their cognitive function (i.e. representing corresponding olfactory concepts) and their communicative function as well (i.e. being sufficient and necessary to realize speakers' communicative intentions in various functional styles of the French language). The author defines the types, composition, principles of compatibility, usage of olfactory nominative units in the language and speech. Some aspects of odors categorization due to the peculiarities of language definition of smelling stimuli in speech nomination have also been studied in the thesis. The author analyses the role of appraisal structure of an utterance in prompting certain criteria and moduses of odor estimation within extended olfactory nominations. The language olfactory scene based on the criteria which have been developed in the process of "naive" nominative activity of French native speakers was reconstructed according to the data of odors speech nomination. The author of the thesis looks into the peculiarities of semantic ways of argumentation in perfumery advertisements. The thesis is a comprehensive research of nominative means of representing smells in the French language and an attempt of detailed description of their language, conceptual and communicative peculiarities.
