Essay

The problem of the category of futurality and its language objectivisation has been the focus of interest of the domestic researchers and specialists in Romance philology. This category has philosophic, logical, psychological and linguistic potential, thus the study of it involves different aspects. The urgency of the research under discussion is preconditioned by the need of a complete study of the category of futurality in contemporary French, which means the grounding of its lingual status, substantiation and systematisation of the major means of expression of explicative and implicative futurality, differentiation of two lingual phenomena – futurality and prospectiveness, identification of realisation peculiarities of the aspects of meaning of the category of futurality and the category of prospectiveness in various types of discourse in contemporary French. The aim of the research has been to determine and describe the conceptual content, language structure and system and modal meaning of the category of futurality in the contemporary French language by defining it as a functional-semantic category. The object of the study is the category of futurality in contemporary French, being realised on different levels of the grammar system: morphemic, morphological, syntactic and semantic. The subject of the research has been the communicative-pragmatic peculiarities and systemic characteristics of the means of explicative and implicative futurality within the framework of a separate functional-semantic category of the contemporary French language. Within the framework of the given research the lexico-grammatical means of explicative and implicative futurality have been singled out and defined in a consistent manner; mental spheres of futurality and zones of their intersection inside and “on the boundary” of different grammar moods have been separated, and lexical means of the futural content expression and futural contexts have been referred to the system of the means of the category of futurality; two language notions “futurality” and “prospectiveness” have been differentiated; phases of the aspectual category of prospectiveness as a constituent of functional-semantic category of futurality, namely planning / intention, agreement, willingness, determination, reluctance / obligation, dedication, inevitability / resignation, inchoativeness and proper near/remote future have been characterised.
