The thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structural and semantic types of secondary nomination functioning in the French language in the Preciosity period (XVI–XVII centuries). The process of nomination is viewed from the standpoint of two directions of linguistic semantics: the semasiological, which focuses on the external form of language character; and onomasiological, which puts the content side in the research center. It has been emphasized that in the second half of the XX century linguistic researches were refocused on revealing the mechanisms of linguistic and mental activity of a person. Thus, a cognitive-onomasiological vector has been actualized within the framework of which our research has been carried out. Primary and secondary nominations have been distinguished. Primary nomination is considered to use linguistic forms for their original purpose, that is, directly to what they were created for. Secondary nomination is considered as 1) the process of repeating a certain unit in artistically styled context; 2) the process of semantic transposition (acquiring another sense with a certain motivation); 3) the process of creating a new word to indicate the existing concepts.
