In the thesis the abstract nouns of the French language in synchronic and diachronic levels and the problem of their modern functioning are investigated. The semantic-functional analysis of abstract nouns in modern French through a prism of their evolution is carried out. That is, the abstract nouns of the XVI-th- XVIII-th centuries - the epoch of the beginning and the development of the classical French language are considered, that gave us the possibility to understand the development essence of the French abstract lexicon. Considerable attention is given to the analysis of semantics of abstract nouns in modern French.
