Essay

The object of the paper is the characters' internal speech in Mauriac's prose. The aim is to define the role of internal speech in order to reconstruct a fragment of the author's picture of the world by means of the study of intellectual and speech activity of the characters from the cognitive and communicative perspective. The methods of conceptual analysis, contextual-situational and interpretative analysis, the elements of transformational method, quantitative analysis of the linguistic datum obtained are used. A new comprehensive approach to the study of internal speech of fictional characters from cognitive and narrative perspectives of fictional semantics combined is advanced. The study of the cognitive aspect of characters' internal speech in F.Mauriac's novels is attempted for the first time as well as more precise definition of the functional characteristics and the role of fictional characters' internal speech from the standpoint of a new research paradigm. As a result the role of internal speech in the composition of Mauriac's novels and their narrative structure was displayed; the main typological characteristics of the characters' internal speech in Mauriac's novels were defined; the regularities of functioning of internal dialogues were revealed; the structure and semantics of internal speech with other forms of presenting other characters' speech inserted were studied; the specific character of group internal speech is described; the role of internal speech as a means of forming the author's picture of the world is exposed; a fragment of Mauriac's picture of the world is reconstructed; the main theses of the research can be introduced into teaching the theory of stylistics (the sections "Genres" and "Styles", "Poetical Tropes and Figures of Speech"), lexicology (the sections "Semasiology", "Phraseology"), theoretical grammar of French (the sections "Morphology", "Syntax"), a course of interpretation of belles-lettres; the study belongs to the field of linguistic theory of poetics, cognitivelinguistics, linguistics of the text.
