Object of research: educational and training process in Transcarpathian schools in the second half of the 19th century till the first half of the 20th century. Purpose of research: to clarify the specific character of studying the creative work of classics of Ukrainian and foreign literatures in Transcarpathian schools during the above mentioned period in order to utilize the foretime achievements in the educational and training process in the contemporary school. Methods of research: chronological, historical and geographical methods, methods of analysis, synthesis, theoretical generalization and comparison of historical and pedagogical facts, systematization and classification of documents, reference and informational materials and literature. The peculiarities of school and humanitarian education development in social, historical and cultural context have been regarded ; the content of school literature courses, principles and motivation for including the works of fine authors in coursebooks and syllabuses and the ways of their studies have been revealed; the contribution of Ukrainian pedagogues and cultural workers to the organization of educational process on the national basis and popularization of remarkable achievements in the world literature have been elucidated; It has been established that Ukrainian and foreign literature studies helped the national self-consciousness development of Transcarpathian students, human values, accessed them to achievements of the world culture. Scientific novelty and theoretical significance of the work lies in that the studies of the creative work of classics of Ukrainian and foreign literatures in Transcarpathian schools in the second half of the 19th century till the first half of the 20th century have been investigated for the first time; the place, the educative and developing function of native and world literatures in the educational and cultural life of the region have been determined; the expediency of implementation of regional studying material into the educational and training process in the contemporary school has been theoretically substantiated; unknown and out-of-the way historical facts have been introduced into the scientific usage; an idea popular in Soviet times concerning unsatisfactory condition of studying literature in the region during the period under consideration has been disproved. Practical significance of the results obtained lies in the creative use of actual materials, basic provisions and conclusions of the studies in the educational and training process in the comprehensive schools and higher pedagogical schools; in the enrichment of methodical treasury of humanity teachers by the developments of the classes in literary regional studies. The materials of this research is being used in teaching literature during Shevchenko and Pushkin holidays, Days of Hungarian culture in the I-III degree comprehensive schools of Transcarpathian province, as well as in the special courses taught in the Uzhgorod National University and Transcarpathian Institute of post-diploma pedagogical education: in the educational and training practice of the Uzhgorod T. Shevchenko I-III degree comprehensive school № 1 and Uzhgorod Gymnasium, the I-III degree comprehensive school, village of Lug, the I-III degree comprehensive school, village of Rosishka, Rakhiv district, and the I-III degree comprehensive school, village of Zolotarevo, Khust district, Transcarpathian province; at the Uzhgorod National University and Transcarpathian Institute of post-diploma pedagogical education - special courses "Transcarpathian literature" and "Literary regional studies in the system of school education"; The basic provisions and conclusions of the thesis could be used in the development of lecture courses and seminars on the history of Ukrainian pedagogical science, history of Ukrainian culture, special courses on the literary regional studies.
