Essay

The dissertation aims at providing a comprehensive analysis of English translation techniques of the Cossackdom concept verbalized in the Ukrainian discourse of history on the basis of interpretative theory of translation. The results demonstrate that intertexual character of the history discourse complicates its communicative modality and predetermines the choice of vocabulary units taken from different semantic and stylistic layers. Due to the specific features of the discourse under study a necessity to classify the discourse elements as nucleus and periphery arises. This classification enables application of such main strategies as: foreignization aimed at retaining foreign elements of a source language and adaptation aimed at adapting the foreign elements to a target language. Key words: the discourse of history, the COSSACKDOM concept, micro-field elements of the nucleus and periphery, hypotextual, textual, hypertextual levels, lexico-semantic, "time-space", characterological contexts, foreignization, adaptation.
