Essay

The object of study – historical development of system of protection of monuments of olden time, both art and museum construction in 1917-1933, which was caused by activization of the best forces of the Ukrainian intelligence in construction of national culture. The purpose of study is the complex research on the basis of the analysis of printed sources, archival materials, periodic press, memoirs literature of monuments keeping activity of F.Ernst. The methods used in the research are: analytical, problem-chronological, comparative-historical, structural-system, concrete-historical analysis. The practical value of work consists in use of the new materials, found out during researches, generalizations and conclusions of by preparation of generalizing works, manuals, local-lore works, high school and school courses on a history of Ukraine, Ukrainian art and museum business. As is shown in dissertation, the unique event of the Ukrainian history of 1917-1933, in the context of national revival, has beenthe activation of the best forces of home intelligentsia in the struggle for development of national culture. One of such scientists-enthusiasts was F.Ernst, the art critic and museum worker. He was a fighter for preservation of the historical and art monuments. About twenty years of his life he devoted to the Ukrainian culture. Due to his intensive activity in 1917-1933 the great number of moveable and monumental cultural and historical values were found, investigated and saved for succeeding generations. Throughout the years, Ernst’s monument-safe activity was interlinked with the development of the Ukrainian museum work. As a result of his hard work in such field there were opened museums in Kiev as well as there were systematized and substantially complemented the collections of already existing museums.
