Essay

The proposed paper concentrates on studying the problem of rendering intertextuality in translation. Intertextuality is defined as interspersing a text with other texts in the form of quotations, allusions and reminiscences. Ways of rendering intertextuality are studied on the material of Ukrainian postmodernist prose literary works and their translations. It has been proved that as far as intertextuality is one of the significant traits of postmodernism, the character of its rendering in translation depends on such considerable features of postmodernist poetics as play and irony. With reference to this fact there have been formulated principles of translation of intertextual units in postmodernist literary works. In this paper intertextual units in Ukrainian postmodernist literary works have been sorted according to their source texts. Ways of rendering intertextual units have been investigated and criteria of optimal using of these ways while translating a postmodernist literary work have been grounded.
