Essay

The dissertation focuses on a study of functional aspects of Modern Greek phraseology, represented in N.Kazantzakis' and S.Myrivilis' novels, and the ways of translation of phrasemes, retaining their original textual roles with view to preserve the literary coherence of the original text. The dissertation reveals how different stylistic patterns (diploglossia), which mark phrasemes in the modern Greek phraseology influence the author's linguo-creative activity. In the paper the process of such marking was defined and how it affects a text-formating / text-producing's function of phrasems in literary text as well as its translation by phraseological or not phraseological means of the target language. The phenomenon of contextual compensation is analyzed as insufficient coincidence between stylistic criteria of the source and target languages. The way of contextual, optional phraseologization on the ground of precedent units of Modern Greek was analyzed, and it has been proved that mostly occasional phraseology is based on precedent names and situation. Elements like occasional phrasemes in literary text express intertextual interactions between the language user and cultural space he belongs to. For the first time, a precedent quotation has been considered as a phraseological unit, and it was revealed how it can be restored by the means of the target language.
