Essay

The thesis advances systemic and functional approaches to the study of complex sentence with a subordinate clause of time in Modern French. Complex sentences (CS) with a subordinate clause of time are viewed from a double nomination perspective: the correlation of language and speech meanings of a sentence as a complex linguistic sign is ascertained. The mental / linguistic / speech trinom in the formation of the sentence-utterance has been distinguished in the "operative time" space. The CS with a subordinate clause of time is a complex linguistic sign which possesses interior systematicity and consists of simple word-signs. The model of CS with a subordinate clause of time P1 conjonction de temps P2" has been generalized in the system of the French language as a monosemantic sign actualized in speech in mono- or polysemantic utterances, where the correspondence between the signified in language and speech is observed in the nomination of referential temporal relations. The hierarchy of the CS modelswith a subordinate clause of time in Modern French has been established, the invariant model of the analysed sentences with its mono- and polysemantic variants is defined. The functional peculiarities of CS with a subordinate clause of time in speech are studied in the light of integrative pragmatics, i.e. in the interaction of structural, semantic, and pragmatic peculiarities of the actualized CS with a subordinate clause of time in Modern French.
