This thesis focuses on the evolving processes which result in quantitative and qualitative changes in the lexical and word-building systems of present-day Spanish stipulated by linguistic and paralinguistic factors. The paper highlights the structure, semantics and functioning of new-formations in the language of contemporary Spanish press. The analysis of their functions as well as current word-building processes made it possible for us to state the main tendencies of enriching the Spanish vocabulary and the ways of influencing affix productivity. This thesis specifies such notions as “new-formation” and “neologism”, defines their relation to “innovation” and “language change”, determines the mechanisms of creating neologisms and the strategies of their identification. The major functions of new-formations in present-day Spanish press are singled out; the main processes, productive word-building patterns and types in modern Spanish are analyzed and classified; the onomasiological categories and designation techniques in modern Spanish are revealed. The intensity of enriching lexical thematic groups with new-formations in present-day Spanish and the result of influence of other languages are found out in the research.
