Essay

The dissertation deals with the examination of the entire corpus of the published Ukrainian translations of Paul Verlaine's poetry. This body serves as a basis for the investigation of major trends and patterns in the formation of the Ukrainian poetic translation since the 1890s. The first chapter, "Paul Verlaine's Poetry in the History and Theory of the Ukrainian Poetic Translation," looks into the contemporary translation studies and literary criticism on the most significant issues of the theory and practice of artistic translation. The theoretical underpinning of the thesis is set forth in this part. The first subchapter, "Translations of Paul Verlaine's Poetry and the Development of the Ukrainian Poetic Translation (from 1890s to early XX century)," investigates to what extent general trends in the development of the Ukrainian poetic translation were manifested during various periods of the Ukrainian Verlainiana. The analysis of the Ukrainian translations of Paul Verlaine's poetry in diachrony and synchronism has allowed for the consideration of the correlation between content equivalence and functional adequacy within a certain cultural and historical milieu, for the display of differences in translators' approaches connected with the linguistic asymmetry and asynchronous essence of the discourses in the original and translation. The second subchapter, "The Role of Paul Verlaine in Shaping the Discourse of Symbolism in French Poetry," offers a study of the principles of combining the traditions of Romanticism and innovations of Symbolism in genres and styles in Verlainian linguo-poetics as well as an examination of certain features of how Verlaine's linguo-poetics impacted the formation and development of the discourse of Symbolism in French poetry. The third subchapter, "The Representation of Paul Verlaine's Poetic Discourse of Symbolism in Ukrainian Poetic Translation," treats the particulars of the impact of Verlaine's symbolist discourse on the literary careers of Ukrainian poets and its recreation in the translations in terms of diachrony and synchronism. Ukrainian poetry where the natural melodious sweetness organically blends in with vocalism, which constitutes the intonation basis of the Ukrainian language, has turned out to be quite receptive to Verlaine's linguo-poetical absorption with the creation of the acoustic image of a poem as a defining ingredient to achieving a symbolist suggestiveness. The comparative study of the poetic texts by I.Franko, L.Ukrainka, M.Voronyi, M.Dray-Khmara, V.Stefanyk's short stories and P.Verlaine's poetry makes for a telling impact of Verlaine's innovations in versification, his imagery on their writings.
