Essay

The object of study – formation, development and decline of process of protection of Ukraine historical-cultural heritage in 1920 - June 1941. The purpose of study is realization of the all-round analysis of activity state, museum, public monument preservation organizations and outstanding figures of Kharkiv region in sphere of protection, study and use of historical and cultural monuments; generalization of the basic tendencies and features, which were inherent for formation, evolution and decline regional monument preservation movement in a context of general historical process. The methods: analysis, synthesis of the facts and sources, structural-system, comparative-historical, problem-chronological, questionnaire-biographic. The practical value of the work: the materials of dissertation research can be used by preparation of generalizing works on a history of Ukraine, tutorials and manuals on monument-lore, historical local-lore, history of museum business etc. The dissertation is devoted to the problems of protection, study and usage of monuments in Kharkiv region in 1920 – June, 1941. Positive and negative features of this process in the context of state social and political changes are revealed. For the first time the stages of formation, development and decay of state and public institutions for monument protection and regional museums are considered on the basis of analysis of published and archival documents, periodicals and the press. The role of some personalities in the preservation of historical and cultural heritage is analyzed. The reasons for monument preservation decay and liquidation of corresponding institutions in the first part of the 1930-ies are revealed. Tragical fates of the repressed Kharkovities are described.
