Biryukov A. The Evaluation of Machine Translation Quality.

The main methods of estimating the quality are described and analyzed. Taking into account the "weight" of a specific mistake and its influence on the general quality, a specific approach to the estimation of electronic translation machines of translation is suggested. Researched is the efficiency of applying machine translation systems for increasing the productivity of translation work with German and Ukrainian. For this purpose, the analysis of machine translation mistakes is carried out, possible causes of their appearing are defined and sometimes the ways of their elimination are suggested. The machine translation of "Pragma 4.4" system (the German>Ukrainian direction) does not satisfy the requirements of quality defined in the dissertation. Nevertheless, it allows the translator to save time if a draft machine translation is used for making a qualitative manual translation. The detailed analysis of machine translation mistakes makes it possible to identify erroneous solutions of the developers and ascertain possible ways of their elimination. The "Pragma 4.4" system does a more qualitative translation in the Russian>Ukrainian translation direction. The worst stage of translating in both systems is their automatic analysis. The majority of mistakes is observed at lexical and contextual levels.
