Essay

The thesis gives the analysis of the existing approaches to the tasks of Translation Studies and evaluation of target texts; as a result a new, objective approach is suggested. According to it all the translations of a certain text into another language make up its culture-lingual genesis, which comprises different aspects of the text image in a foreign culture. In the framework of the culture-language genesis of a text two approaches to translation are suggested: re-coding and re-creation, none of which is "better" than the other one. The author of the thesis differentiates the code shift on such text levels as language, style, literature and culture. The following types of dialogue with the original are distinguished: interpersonal, interliteratural and intercultural. Theoretical points are illustrated by the analysis of Ukrainian translations of poetry in English.
