Essay

The thesis focuses on the history of alternative education in the USA. It has been determined that the religious-traditionalist movement, the humanistic- progressive tradition and the innovations of leading educators were very potent forces in development in early alternative education. It was considered that actual growth of alternative schools during the latter half of the 20th century inspired a movement of reform within the public education system and gained the legislative recognition. The difference in definition and application of the term „alternative education" across the USA was revealed. The characteristics of alternative programs determining variety of their models and types were described. The measures of effectiveness were summarized. The historical role of alternative education in providing education choice in the USA was observed. The recommendations of positive alternative education experience for introduction in Ukraine were determined.
