Essay

The author of the dissertation study has conducted an integral analysis of O. Zaluzhnyi’s scientific and pedagogical work in the context of the pedagogy development in Ukraine in the 20–30-s of the 20-th century, defined the principal factors for his world view formation, specified the milestones of his life, determined the content and priorities of his scientific and research activities, highlighted aspects of the theory of a collective in the O. Zaluzhnyi’s creative heritage.The author has proved that in the middle of 20-s O. Zaluzhnyi was one of the first national pedagogues who substantiated the theory of a collective of children, defined the notion of a collective, suggested a classification of collectives as well as developed test methods for studying collectives of children. Being a Department Head at the Scientific and Research Institute of Pedagogy and the Head of the Social Pedagogy Lab at the Kharkiv UkrSocVykh Research Station he organized and conducted a number of studies of children younger than 3 as well as of orderliness and discipline of pupils’ collectives and social skills of labour schools pupils.
