Essay

This thesis focuses on the peculiarities of French comic crime fiction in terms of its organisational structure. To determine linguistic and stylistic parameters of French comic crime fiction a comprehensive approach has been introduced, within which the analysis of a novel's structure and composition is combined with the study of respective linguistic means. The role of humorous tonality has been ascertained as closely related to the narrative perspective, being part of the "image of the author", while defining the mode of the detective narrative as a comic one. The tonality was shown as mirrored by lexical and syntactical linguistic means and figures of speech. The thesis highlights the role that egocentric linguistic units play in the actualisation of the narrator (the subject of speech) and of a character (the subject of conscience). Communicative strategies and tactics that define characters' speech identity in French crime fiction have been explicated. It has been revealed that speech behaviour of the characters depends on their positional roles, predetermined by the detective genre.
