Essay

This dissertation studies the literary works of J.-M. G. Le Clezio, a prominent writer of French Postmodern travel prose, focusing on the author's individual picture of the world. The latter is analysed within the framework of linguistic and stylistic features of the textual concept-constant JOURNEY as realised in his fiction. The term 'concept-constant', coined for the present study, has been crucial for pinning down the essential conceptual components of the author's individual picture of the world, as well as for shaping the prototypical model for the travel prose and elucidating the model's manifestation in Le Clezio's texts. The physical axis of the concept is examined from the cognitive and propositional perspectives. The key constituents of the model are singled out and the tendencies in their verbal expression are outlined. The research reveals the imaginary aspect of the concept-constant JOURNEY manifestation against the background of textual anthropocentres' unfolding in various possible worlds. The study of the means employed in the possible worlds' verbalisation in Le Clezian poetics has made it possible to suggest their classification, clarify the types of their correlation, and outline the tendencies in their textual positioning.
