Essay

The object - gymnasium curriculum (the second half of the XIXth - the beginning of the XXth century); the aim - to analyze theoretical ideas, to generalize the practice of foreign language teaching as a content component of gymnasium curriculum of the second half of the XIXth - the beginning of the XXth century and to point out the perspectives of historical experience implementation in modern conditions; the methods - the complex of general theoretical methods, historical-structural, historical-comparative, retrospective, prognostic; the novelty - the reasons for including foreign languages into the gymnasium curriculum are determined, scholars' viewpoints on the value of teaching foreign languages are systematized and stages in the development of foreign language teaching theory and practice in the gymnasiums during the period under research are substantiated, the perspectives of foreign language teaching improvement in the present-day schools of Ukraine are singled out; the results - the main ideas,results and conclusions are to be incorporated in the teaching courses for future philologists, linguists, language teachers and are important for further historical-pedagogical comparative studies of theory and practice of foreign language teaching at different stages in the development of secondary schools and education in Ukraine and abroad.
