Onyshchenko J. Software localization in the English-Ukrainian translations

The research paper analyses software localization from the translator's point of view and defines this linguistic activity as a new translation genre. With this paper for the first time in the Ukrainian translation studies a comprehensive study of translation aspects of software localization from English into Ukrainian has been completed; the specific characteristics of software localization as a matter of translation theory have been identified; common difficulties of the Microsoft products localization into Ukrainian have been defined and classified; typical shortcomings and mistakes of the named translations have been analyzed; solutions for overcoming the identified difficulties and avoiding the mistakes have been determined. For each of the difficulties and imperfections identified in the current translations, the author of this paper has made her own suggestions for improvement. Some of the current translations have also been analyzed quantitatively to exhibit the full range of patterns.
