Object – the formation and development of the principle of a national character in upbringing in the pedagogical science of the second half of the XIX-XXth centuries; scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that: for the first time the whole scientific analysis of the national character as a principle of upbringing in the pedagogical science of the second half of the XIX-XXth centuries has been made, there have been revealed the pre-conditions and defined the stages of the formation and development of the national character as a principle of children’s upbringing, the ideas of historical pedagogical and theoretical aspects of the investigation of the problem of a national character principle in the upbringing in the pedagogical science of the second half of the XIX-XXth centuries have found its further development, as well as the essence of the notion “the principle of a national character in upbringing”. Some unknown and little-known archive documents, historical facts connected with theresearch problem have been included into the scientific circulation, there has been offered an own definition of the key concept of the thesis – the principle of a national character.
