Essay

The thesis focuses on the conditions and ways of translating new mass media metaphors of the English language into Ukrainian. Taking into account the communicative and functional peculiarities of translating new metaphors, the thesis develops a typology of translating metaphoric neologisms of the 1990-s - 2000-s. Special attention is given to the structural and semantic types of their formation as well as lexical and semantic categories of innovations. It also discloses conceptual and lingual peculiarities of translating English-language new metaphors that denote social realia and lingually represent conceptual metaphors. Loan translation is recognized as a typical way of rendering English new metaphors into Ukrainian, since it preserves the structural and lexical identity with the source metaphor as well as renders its communicatively expressive social and cultural, lexical and semantic contents. At the structural and semantic levels, loan translation prevails in translating new metaphoric phrases, compound words, and affixed derivatives. Loan-translation of metaphors that have appeared due to semantic derivation renders their semantic basis. New blends are mostly translated by means of semi-loan translation - loan-translation combined with transcoding.
