Essay

This thesis focuses on the research of Spanish literary discourse of the postmodern period from linguistic and cognitive perspectives. The paper highlights the level of investigation of Spanish literary discourse of the postmodern period and specifies the definitions of such terms as postmodern literary discourse and postmodern literary text. The research of postmodern Spanish literary discourse based upon Latin American short stories made it possible to single out such textual concepts as TIME, PLAY, LABYRINTH, MIRROR, LIBRARY, INFINITY, BOOK, LOOK-A-LIKE, DREAM, POSSIBLE WORLD, ISLAND, to analyse them lexically and syntactically. The main principles of postmodern poetics, which are crucial for defining Spanish postmodern literary discourse have been pointed out. Narrative structures of postmodern Spanish short stories within the framework of a semantic-narrative approach to investigate the problem of the possible worlds have been analysed. The thesis also determines the forms of literary intertextuality as one of the leading features of postmodernism. Quotation, allusion, epigraph, translation and parody are the principal linguistic means which provoke interteхtuality.
