Essay

The thesis triggers word-formation specificity of English and Ukrainian in terms of translation for finding the ways of preserving their meaning in present-day fiction. In Ukrainian translation studies this is the first comprehensive examination of word-formation specifity revealed in translation. The research identifies productivity of a certain word-formation type typical of either English or Ukrainian that leads to difficulties in translation of language units. Original texts of modern English and Ukrainian fiction and their translations are used as the к for research. The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusions, a list of reference literature and two appendices. In Chapter I the systems of the English and Ukrainian word-formation are singled out and compared in terms of translation. Special attention is paid to possible difficulties in translation of fiction texts caused by differences in English and Ukrainian. The investigation determines the ways of overcoming these difficulties. The thesis reveals that such types of modern English word-formation as syntactic and bahuvrihi compounding, blending and conversion are not productive in present-day Ukrainian. Such ways of Ukrainian word-formation as compounding with interfixes and words with diminutive and augmentative suffixes have to be taken into account in English-Ukrainian translation. Chapter 2 presents the results of investigation of productive types of modern English word-formation: namely, composition, abbreviation, shortening, conversion, suffixation and prefixation. The analysis of English-Ukrainian translation of language units built by different types of word-formation is carried out.
