Essay

Object – activity of the representatives of Ukrainian pedagogical ideas at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century; subject of research – pedagogical ideas and public and educational activity of M.M. Arkas; aim of research – to determine the essence of pedagogical and public and educational activity of M.M. Arkas in the context of development of cultural and educational movement in Ukraine at the second half of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century; methods of research: theoretical: analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization, classification of historic facts and processes; empiric: finding and revealing the historic sources, studying and generalization of practical experience of M.M. Arkas from the point of view of modern development of pedagogical science; special research methods; chronological, which made it possible to study and analyze the pedagogical ideas of M.M. Arkas in the context of historic epoch and time succession; concrete and searching – for finding, selecting and analyzing the published and archive materials, studying the philosophical, historic, pedagogical literature, local materials and modern mass media publications in the region devoted to the problems of research; historic and structural – for revealing the trends of pedagogical and educational activity of M.M. Arkas; searching and bibliographical – for studying the library and archive materials; personalistic and biographical – for revealing the separate public, cultural and educational figures in the context of M.M. Arkas’ activity; interpretation and generalization of processed materials – for formulation of conclusions; scientific novelty and theoretical significance of the obtained results lies in the fact that for first time: the main pedagogical ideas and public and educational activity of M.M. Arkas have been studied in complex; the experience of M.M. Arkas pedagogical activity has been generalized; the main factors influencing the formation of M.M. Arkas’ pedagogical outlook (family and social background, personalities impact, cultural and educational media in which the personality of M.M. Arkas was formed) have been characterized; considerate amount of factual material concerning the pedagogical activity of M.M. Arkas in the sphere of dissemination of education, national idea and culture has been generalized; the research has been done on the basis of personalistic approach which made it possible not only to trace the role and place of M.M. Arkas in the history of pedagogics but also to reveal his individuality and outlook; the pedagogical content of the book by M.M. Arkas “History of Ukraine-Rus” has been considered; the value of he creative heritage of M.M. Arkas for modern pedagogical science as an important factor of forming the national dignity, patriotism and social conscience in the young generation has been determined; the unknown and less known documents and materials connected with pedagogical and public and educational activity of M.M. Arkas, as well as historic facts which made it possible to revel and systematize the data on pedagogical activity of M.M. Arkas and its impact on the educational processes of the 20th century have been introduced in scientific turn.
