Essay

The dissertation studies ways of producing intertextual irony in prosaic texts of British and American writers and analyzes strategies for reproducing this irony in translation with regard to the particular cultural context. Intertextual irony is generated by contrasting two texts of different tones that share a common element (such as a frame) which functions as allusion of the metatext to the prototext. To reproduce the intertextual irony in translation, it is necessary to reproduce the contrast between the tones of the alluding and alluded texts, allowing, at the same time, for a "naive" reading.
