The research paper is dedicated to the investigation of stylistics and iconography of the XVIIIth century monumental painting in the brickwork edifices of the Galicia. It was proved that, according to the formal characteristics, the Galician paintings have much in common with the catholic European art of that time and are typical for the European outlying districts. Arts synthesis was then immanent for the decoration of both catholic and orthodox churches. Still there was some difference. It is shown by means of examples that iconographic painting programmes were created in close cooperation of an artist and a theologist and were aimed at spreading and consolidation of the basic catholic doctrines as well as cults of the saints. Semantic analysis of certain scenes and iconographic motives (taking into consideration the subordination of the church) made it possible to reveal the ideological contents of the mural paintings.
