Essay

This thesis focuses on the study of phonosemantic means of poetic information compression in French symbolist poetry of the late 19th – early 20th century within the framework of semiotic, cognitive and communicative approaches. Poetic information compression is viewed in the thesis as a linguomental mechanism which moulds the virtual reality of a symbolist poetic text, pertaining to three levels: preconceptual, conceptual, and verbal. With regard to the figurative nature of sound iconicity a semiotic typology of symbolist poetic texts’ phonic structures has been worked out, dividing them into sound-imitating, sound-symbolic, and synaesthetic ones. Cognitive and communicative aspects of poetic information compression in the poetry by Ch. Baudelaire, P. Verlaine, A. Rimbaud have been analysed by singling out, on the phonosemantic basis, the following key models:"Ugly (etre) Beautiful", "Part (etre) Whole","I (etre) I".
