Object: the theory and practice of monitoring for the quality of instruction in the process of its historic development. Aim: to distinguish the main tendencies of the making and development of monitoring for the quality of instruction in secondary schools in France of the second half of the 20th c. on the basis of the analysis of the theory and practice of pupils' knowledge control. Practical value: there have been elaborated a special course "Assessment of pupils' knowledge in secondary schools in France" for students of ped. specialties and substantiated the guidelines. Methods: chronological, prognostic, theoretical, empirical.
