The dissertation is devoted to the complex study of scientific activity of D. Shcherbakivskyi (1877-1927) in the context formation of Ukrainian art history as an independent sphere of scientific knowledge and its institutionalization in the first third of the 20th century. On the broad source material scientific biography of the scientist is reconstructed; indissoluble connection of his practical (museum, scientific organizational, protection of cultural heritage, pedagogical) and research activity is shown; the main trends, themes and methods of his research are identified; his studies of art reserve is analyzed according to the problem and thematic principle. It allowed us to define D. Shcherbakivskyi's place in the Ukrainian art history.
