Essay

In the dissertation the detailed retrospective analysis of pedagogical views and scientific-elucidative activity of M. Kostomarov (1817-1885) as a teacher and an enlightener, a historian and an ethnographer, a scientist and an active public man is carried out. Basic factors which influenced on the forming of M. I. Kostomarov's world outlook and his pedagogical views are described and analyzed; 5 main periods of his creative activity as an enlightener are investigated. M. Kostomarov's personality is defined as a teacher and pedagogue; general pedagogical ideas are systematized and defined; The content of M. Kostomarov's activity, which is directed at affirming of Ukrainian language is given; The contribution of Kostomarov-historian into development of education in Ukrainian lands is determined. Kostomarov's ideas at improvement of university education in Russian Empire in XIX century are summarized. The source field of researching problem is clarified and expanded, unknown archival documents and historical facts are inculcated into scientific usage, which helped to extend the coverage of pedagogical ideas and determine their influence on the educational processes of the nineteenth century. The main results of research can be used in the course of history of pedagogics at pedagogical institutions, in seminars from the problem of development of the public education, and also can be used in further scientific historical-pedagogical researches.
