Object - the teaching process in Ukrainian gymnasiums in XIX - at the beginning of XX century; aim - to consider theoretical ideas and generalize the experience of organization of teaching according to the principle of individual work in Ukrainian gymnasiums in XIX - at the beginning of XX century with the aim of modern school teaching process improvement; methods - historical-comparative, system-structural, searching strategy; novelty - the research has been the first one to represent the origin and history of development of the principle of pupils' individual work in Ukrainian gymnasiums during the chronological period of XIX - at the beginning of XX century, the main stages in the development of the principle of individual work in Ukrainian gymnasiums during the period under research are singled out and scientifically substantiated, the prognostic tendencies of further development of the principle of individual work in gymnasiums of Ukraine are defined; results - the programme of integrated specialized seminar "Individual work in theory and practice of gymnasium education" and tasks for independent research work for students of masters' courses in pedagogical institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation are worked out; field - pedagogy
