Essay

This thesis focuses on the study of syntagmatic and paradigmatic aspects of actancy in the French discourse. The paper highlights theoretic and methodological fundamentals of actancy analysis in linguistics and elucidates its interrelation with valency and predicativity. Research methods dealing with syntagmatics and paradigmatics of actancy in the French discourse have been developed. Main sentence models are distinguished in the thesis on the basis of the actants’ number in their structure and with regard to their obligatory or facultative character. Syntagmatic models of the actant group with the capability to expand or reduce have been singled out. Functional peculiarities of actancy in incomplete elliptical sentences have been analyzed revealing its implicit character. The paper systematizes paradigmatic means of discursive expression of actancy and demonstrates the cases of antinomy pertaining to functional roles of semantic and syntactical actancy in the French discourse
