Essay

The thesis focuses on the partially equivalent lexical units' relations in Ukrainian literary translation. An updated translation category of partial lexical equivalence is introduced. This category is based on a special type of source and target languages lexical units' correspondence which is realized on the level of the lexical meaning components. The definition of the partial lexical equivalence is delivered. The latter is postulated as an asymmetry of the lexical meaning key components revealed in the comparison of the corresponding lexemes in the lexicographical sources or precise context by means of componential analysis. This analysis is performed on all the levels of a lexical level: semantic, pragmatic, and syntactic. The phenomenon under study is also given a clear position in the system of translation studies notions and terms. Thus it is stated that the partial lexical equivalence is easily imbedded in some hierarchical systems. Its horizontal aspect reveals the partial lexical equivalence as an intermediate position between the translation categories of equivalence and no-direct-equivalence ("inequivalence") which are better researched than the category of partial lexical equivalence. The vertical aspect of partial lexical equivalence regulates the priority relations between the levels of the lexical meaning while implementing partial lexical equivalents in English-Ukrainian artistic translation characterized by dynamic equivalence of the source and target texts.
