The dissertation topic is shtetl as the main subject of creativity of the Jewish artists of Ukraine in the context of Jewish national art and European modernistic searches. Shtetl is regarded as a cultural and visual symbol of the East European Jewry with its characteristic image, architecture and traditional art. The evolution of the shtetl image solutions from the slice-of-life approach to avant-garde experiments is demonstrated.
