Essay

This dissertation presents a study of different types of local lore lexis in the local lore texts from translational perspective. The main problems of local lore studies are proved within the framework of translation studies. The basic notion of local lore is singled out in translation studies as the concept KRAI / HOMELAND, which is characterized as a verbal and cultural concept reflecting comparatively small space, which stands aloof from the world where "one's own people" live under "one's own laws" with "one's own system of values". The conceptual nuclear of linguistic concept KRAI / HOMELAND is formed on the base of the unity of its basic features, which are foregrounded on the structural, functional and text-typological levels. They are location, anthropological features, and cultural code. The unity of basic features of the concept KRAI / HOMELAND defines the dominant set of lexis, the realization of which in the text redounds to revealing its conceptual development. The lexis comprises local lore symbols, local lore realias and lexical units with evaluating semantics. The local lore symbols are the words, the symbolic meaning of which reflects the specificity of areal, national and cultural values of definite ethnos. The local lore realias are the words in nomination of which the whole complex of ethnic and cultural information of definite area is semantically reconstituted. From translational perspective the paradigm of local lore texts was built on the basis of such criteria as: 1) text-typological norms of every type of texts within source and target linguistic culture; 2) the degree of pragmatic potential of the source text and its correlation with the target text; 3) the specificity of the realization of culture oriented lexis of the source text and the target text; 4) the degree of preservation / non preservation of pragmatic potential of the source text while trans-coding the culture marked lexis. Pre-translation analysis of the pragmatic local lore types of texts enabled to distinguish the linguistic and cultural specificity of the culture oriented types of texts in Eastern European (Ukrainian and Russian) and Western European linguistic traditions. The results of the analysis made it possible to outline the main strategies and techniques of the local lore lexis in translation. It has been proved that preservation / non preservation of the typological integral and differential features influences on adequate identification of a definite type of text within the target linguistic and cultural tradition. The translation analysis of the local lore types of texts points out the set of dominant ways of translation for definite type of local lore lexis in every type of local lore text and denotes the degree of adequate / non adequate trans-coding of linguistic concept KRAI / HOMELAND taking into account the structural, functional and text-typological stereotypes of target recipient. Key words: translational model, translational strategies and techniques, linguistic concept KRAI / HOMELAND, local lore symbol, local lore realia, lexical units with evaluating semantics, vocabulary entry, academic article, album, guide book.
