Kondratieva O. Kondratieva O.V. Cohesion and Coherence in the Ukrainian Translation of English Scientific Texts

The thesis sets out to provide a comprehensive study of text connexity represented by cohesion and coherence in the Ukrainian translation. It’s based on the data collected from original and translated texts of English and Ukrainian scientific prose. Within the approach conducted text coherent parameters have been defined, peculiarities providing text coherence have been analyzed, and devices providing text cohesion have been described, with special attention paid to the ways and methods of their Ukrainian rendering. It’s established that the surface structure of the scientific texts reveals by means of linguistic features the relations within the surface structure as well as between the deep structures. The thesis proves that the choice of linguistic features providing scientific texts connexity in translation is not only defined by the coherent structure of the original text, it is also defined by the ways of rendering the cohesive ties of the source language text.
