The best samples of Ukrainian classical prose were brought to European readers by Ukrainian translators (O. Kobylianska, I. Budz, O. Rozdolskyi, I. Popovych), as well as by intellectuals of other nations.On the basis of the comparative analysis of original and target texts the difference between levels of translation adequacy has been proved. It is caused by the development of translation principles, the needs of society, the difference of social conditions. The characteristic axiom in the research is the statement that adequate translation, based on a realistic method, should be grounded on the reproduction of the original in the interconnection of content and form, a detail and the whole, typical and characteristic features.
