Holovchuk S. The problem of moulding a patriot of the state in a pedagogical legacy of Hryhoriy Vaschenko (1878-1967)

On the basis of the holistic retrospective analysis of pedagogical legacy and work of H. Vaschenko the dissertation presents his ideas about patriotic education of Ukrainians as an aim of our national pedagogy which was looked at by H. Vaschenko as a combination of European philosophical and pedagogical thoughts and Ukrainian national pedagogy. Among the key dominant ideas of national upbringing singled out by H. Vaschenko were the following: religious and spiritual fundamentals (the God) and patriotism (Ukraine) as integral manifestation of the nature of Ukrainians. The dissertation defines and characterizes 5 basic stages of the development of H. Vaschenko's views on a national issue and the problem of moulding a patriot. It is found out that the principal means of moulding a patriot of the state as it was seen by the scholar is the development of a willpower and strong character with regard to the knowledge of personal psychological development and in combination with scientifically substantiated physical development. The thesis gives the analysis of transformation of social-moral principle of patriotism in a national pedagogical thought between the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 21-st century. The author's independent interpretation of a notion "patriot of the state" is thus presented and founded.
