Romanyuha N. Linguostylistic and Semiological Dimensions of the Author's Artistic World Representation (based on English translations of the late 19th/early 20th century Ukrainian short stories).

The research concentrates on the particular ways the short stories of Ukrainian authors have been interpreted by English translators. The paper investigates linguostylistic and semiological peculiarities of short stories from the practical standpoint of decoding in translation the author's individual style. It features the present state of short story studies and the existing Ukrainian-to-English translations of short stories of the late 19th/early 20th century, highlighting the most vital theoretical problems of their representation in translation. The first chapter deals with genre features of short stories with relation to the concept of the author's artistic world. The notion of translation adequacy in the aspect of short story genre is being theorized. With that end in view, the chapter specifies the notion of linguostylistic adequacy and suggests the notion of semiological adequacy. It considers the issue of comprehensive mastering of the short story author's artistic world by the translator(s) and its further textual representation in English, providing a detailed analysis of various translation shifts.
