Vasylyk A. M. Rudnytskyi's strategy in the context of Ukrainian artistic translation of the 20th century.

The thesis deals with the translation activity, translation theory and method of Mykhailo Rudnytskyi (1886?1975), a prominent Ukrainian writer, translator, literary critic, theatrical studies scholar, journalist and public figure. His creative oeuvre is examined in the context of the Ukrainian literary translation with a focus on his translation strategy. The research consists of an introduction, four chapters, conclusions, a list of references and two appendices. The first chapter sheds light on Rudnytskyi's diverse and hitherto unknown legacy from the perspective of genre theory. The translator's world vision, the individuality, which shaped his/her translation strategies and techniques, and its nature is another aspect discussed in the chapter. Rudnytskyi was at his most prolific in the period covering the 1920s and 1930s. In this section of the thesis it is proved that the role of the Ukrainian artistic translation at that time was not limited to the aesthetic and informative functions. In fact, translation contributed to cultural enlightenment, shaped national identity and, ultimately, facilitated nation shaping in Ukraine. Such motivation for translation helped forge a function-oriented strategy, one driven by the need to develop and enrich the Ukrainian language and culture. Rudnytskyi translated writings from more than thirteen literatures and of diverse literary genres. Some of these works did not see alternative translations until the late 20th century. In this chapter, we seek to explore Rudnytskyi's views on translation by examining major trends in translation practice that held sway in the first decades of the 20th century. This chapter posits that Rudnytskyi was one of the first to elaborate and apply linguistic, typological and genre approach to the task of translation.
