Essay

The dissertation focuses on the research of linguocultural stereotypes in French media. As linguistic and cultural phenomena stereotypes are regarded against cultural and historical contexts that highlight their nature. The dissertation seeks to define the role of stereotypes as a part of linguocultural picture of the world, to observe the evolution of stereotypes, taking into account linguocultural and cognitive factors that influence changes in stereotypical images, and to define basic stereotype traits of identity that are referred to in French media discourse. Stereotypes of identity are regarded as schematic and symbolic characteristics of a person, group of persons or phenomena that simplify and reduce their traces to prototypical. Linguocultural stereotypes are marked by stability and emotionality and are determined by the culture. As far as this dissertation adopts a lingvocultural and lingvocognitive approach, the methodological tools used in the paper are the following: linguistic, linguocultural and psychological analysis of vocabulary definitions, content analysis, interpretation, contextual and descriptive methods.
